At Peace Partners we believe in the inalienable rights of all to a warm, nutritious meal, and to ensuring that no one is left wanting this holiday season. The challenge of food scarcity is greater than ourselves. It demands a collaborative effort. That’s why this year we are proud to support FareShare UK in our Food Security Winter Appeal. WHO ARE FARESHARE UK? For more than two decades, FareShare UK have been providing nutritious meals to vulnerable communities, partnering with local area grocery chains and restaurant owners to help re-direct food surplus where it’s most in need. To date, FareShare UK has redistributed more than 24, 000 tonnes of food to its nearly 11,000 charity partners, serving up 57 million equivalent meals to hungry homes and kitchenettes across the country. RAISED SO FAR: £ 0.00 TARGET: £2000Imagine a society where farmers and herdsmen toil hours a day over ripe red tomatoes, green cabbage and goat’s milk, only to then bury two-thirds of it back under ground. Imagine your local butcher and fishmonger sliding kilos of day-old meat into the bin as a grocery worker scans each aisle for damaged packaging, hurling full boxes and half-pan bags into her slowly overflowed trolley and miles removed from the empty cupboards of a hungry mum. Sadly this is not some dystopian vision of feast and famine in the 21st century. We see the wild intersection of food scarcity, waste, and overabundance play out around the world from food deserts in Chicago to rampant famine across Yemen, Syria, and Madagascar. Food security remains one of the most perplexing issues of the modern age, far-outstanding even the immediate challenge of a global pandemic. It can be difficult to comprehend or even visualise the scale of our growing food crisis, as the names and faces of those most affected are left to suffer in silence. The systemic cycle of food waste in restaurants and grocery chains can often overshadow individual initiatives, limiting the impact of our good intentions. Amid these extraordinary times, the UK is blessed to have a charitable organisation like FareShare and its dedicated team of 1,500 volunteers working to ensure that no family goes hungry in this great land of plenty. As the world continues to grapple with an unprecedented health emergency, whose impact is disproportionately felt among vulnerable at-risk groups, the essential services of FareShare are in greater demand than ever before. 2020 has been fraught with hardship, but it also continues to show us all the importance of community. In that inspired spirit, Peace Partners is proud to support FareShare this holiday season. Written by: Sean Morrissey
